Within my art I feel the freedom and ability to accomplish anything I desire. Art gives me the power to express myself with the creation of a physical or visual object. With art I feel as anything I can imagine in my mind I can make with my hands. This past summer a friend and I wanted to take a trip on the Erie Canal. Instead of buying a boat, we built our own. This was such a rewarding experience; many people doubted my ability or foresight to be able to create such an object. I had confidence I would be able to make it, because I could see every detail in my mind. Art gives one an independence to put one’s creative perspectives and thoughts into physical or visual objects, putting one’s confidence and even insecurities on display for anyone to see. Each project is a chance to conquer a challenge, and make something meaningful out of nothing. There are supporters and critics, each is just an opinion and make no difference to my pride or personal satisfaction. Critics only create another form of motivation; to do things people have not done before.Monday, September 5, 2011

ReplyDeleteHello Devon,
ReplyDeleteI love the example for art making that you picked for your artist statement: You built a boat with your friend!
This is really a great inspiration that shows that art provides us with the ability to accomplish our desires. Many people use to think about museum exhibitions when they think about “art”. But your statement shows that the notion of art can be very closely connected to our personal lives and the dreams we want to achieve.
It would be great if you could find ways to document these kinds of projects and to share them online with other people. Perhaps as a web project that combines photos, videos and texts?
Here are some projects that might be interesting for you:

I am curious to learn about your ideas for future projects.

I agree that art is putting your insecurities as well as your passion and creativity on display for everyone to see and critique. Let the critics be your motivation to keep making and creating something meaningful out of a blank canvas.
ReplyDeleteI find that your statement "Critics only create another form of motivation; to do things people have not done before" to be very insightful and wise. In my experience I see a lot of people ignore the words of a critic, and even their very own peers and friends simply due to an overabundance of pride and ego for their work. The end result: a grudge forms and a barrier is erected. But for you to use it as a form of motivation; wonderful!
